GU10 Downlights

A GU10 downlight fitting is one of the most straightforward ways to add recessed lighting to a home or workplace. The fitting itself is a simple recessed housing that takes a standard GU10 bulb, so if a lamp ever fails, you just swap the bulb rather than replacing the whole unit. It's this simplicity, combined with the fact that GU10 fittings run straight off mains voltage with no transformer needed, that's made them one of the most widely used downlight types in the UK.

Fire-rated GU10 downlights are built to do more than just hold a bulb: the fire-rated housing is designed to seal the hole cut into the ceiling in the event of a fire, helping to restore the ceiling's fire barrier rather than leaving a gap for flames or smoke to pass through. For most homes with a ceiling void above (a loft space, or a floor above), a fire rated downlight is the safer, building-regulation-friendly choice compared to a standard, non-fire-rated fitting, and the compact die-cast design means it fits into the same tight ceiling voids a standard downlight would.

Bathrooms bring an extra consideration: moisture. A downlight installed in a bathroom needs the right IP (Ingress Protection) rating for the zone it's going into, particularly zones 1 and 2, which cover the areas around a bath or shower where water exposure is more likely. An IP65-rated GU10 downlight is sealed against dust and water jets, making it suitable for these zones, whereas a standard IP20 fitting is designed for dry, general-purpose rooms only. Always check the IP rating of a downlight against the specific bathroom zone it's going into before installing.
